Gulf War
U.S. History
12/3/13
The Gulf War started in 1990 and ended in 1991. Iraq had invaded their neighboring country Kuwait because of their oil, Iraq claimed that Kuwait was historically part of Iraq. United States gets involved due to Iraq invading. The Gulf War was necessary due to the United States wanting to liberate Kuwait, having allies in the region, and feeling that Iraq was disrupting the "Balance of Powers".
United States wanting to liberate Kuwait shows the Gulf War was necessary because United States wanted to liberate Kuwait. U.S felt it was wrong for Iraq to invade and control Kuwait for their oil (Eckert)."It was told that United States wanted to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi control" (Zinn,595). This quote is convincing because it shows U.S. intentions were to free Kuwait from Iraq because they felt Iraq was in the wrong. Iraqi intentions were to take control over the oil that was in Kuwait and take what they felt was rightly theirs. "Iraq was on its way to building a nuclear bomb"(Zinn,595). Zinn is saying that the real reason that U.S. went to war was because they felt threatened that Iraqi was building nuclear power that could potentially attack the United States and ruin the none use of nuclear power.
United States having allies in the region, including Kuwait, shows that the Gulf War was necessary because United States is allied with Kuwait and other countries in the region. Therefore United States felt that they needed to protect their allies. "The people of the United States and our friends and allies will not live at the mercy of an outlaw regime that threatens the peace with weapons of mass murder"(Bush). This quote is convincing because we have allied forces in the Gulf that we needed to protect from Iraq. Bush felt that is was our duty to stop Iraq from taking over Kuwait because they are an allied force that needed help. Bush states that their were NATO allies in the region that needed to be protected from Iraq aggression. "America is nerver wholly herself unless she is engaged in high moral principle"(American Nations). This quote shows that as the United States we had a duty to protect our allies from the aggression that Iraq had on Kuwait for their oil. United States felt that we needed to step in and help our allies win the war because it was morally right. Zinn feels that United States wanted to go to war to keep the oil in Kuwaits power for United States own benefit not to protect our allies for Iraq aggression.
Iraq having control over Kuwait disrupted “Balance Of Power” showed that the Gulf War was necessary because the United States wanted to insure that Kuwait controlled themselves. Bush says that the Balance of power is being disrupted because Iraq is trying to gain too much power which
